A Hoopa Tribal non-profit media organization that strives to represent native american culture, entertainment, role models and current events. ONG also trains youth in how to become broadcast journalists and filmmakers. All videos directed, produced and edited by On Native Ground staff and volunteers.
MMIWP - Gift of Fear - Official trailer 2024
"Gift of Fear," is a dramatic action narrative film about a Native American foster youth, Mili. Mili moves to a new group home and joins a Jui Jitsu MMA team where she meets her coach, Koko, a strong Native woman who believes in her. When Mili's girlfriend goes missing, she decides to go looking for her. "Gift of Fear" is based on true incidents that have occurred within the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s #MMIW crisis which affect Native women and their communities in North America and Canada. In addition to Indigenous girls, Foster youth are also vulnerable to being stolen and experiencing sexual exploitation.
This film was produced by On Native Ground (a Hoopa Tribal non-profit media organization) in association with RISE (Resources in Indian Student Education), two Native American organizations based in Northern California, driven by the urgent need to bring more awareness to this epidemic. “Gift of Fear” was created by Hoopa Tribal member, Director and Scriptwriter, Jack Kohler, Yurok, Karuk and Hoopa Native, Scriptwriter and Actress, Carly Kohler, and Aniyvwiya Tribal member, California Indian Educator of the Year, Executive Producer, Dr. April Lea Go Forth.
Jack and Carly, a father-daughter script writing duo, began writing “Gift of Fear” on June 27, 2021. They began searching for Native leaders who were trying to create change and bring awareness to the MMIW issue. Carly and Jack met Kola Shippentower-Thompson in Boise Idaho at an Jiu Jitsu tournament while working on a documentary project. Kola shared the Wisawca Project that she developed and her safety plan to circumvent the 72-hour hold time on missing persons. Kola was cast as ‘Keech’ in the film and her document is part of the storyline in “Gift of Fear.”
Jack has been writing scripts for the past twenty years. Carly Kohler has six years of experience being a Child Protective Services Social Worker and currently is a school counselor for a tribal school. Mili’s story is based upon actual events. Carly drew from her experience of working with Native foster youth who taught her what it means to be resilient and what adult supporters of youth need to do to “hang in there” with a struggling young person. Carly has taken many 2 a.m. calls from foster youth because she knew their second call could be to a pimp. Missing and murdered Indigenous people are too often victims of sex trafficking. Gift of Fear addresses how young people are vulnerable to being groomed for a sex trafficking lifestyle, abducted and exploited.
The first scene was shot October 16, 2021 and that scene was used to secure funding for this Ultra Low Budget SAG AFTRA feature film. Tribal organizations, Arts Foundations, City Film Commissions and individual contributions funded the project.
Pre-production began in October, 2021. Production began June 4, 2022 and Principal Photography concluded on June 27, 2022, exactly one year from when the script-writing process began.
Post-Production began July 2, 2022. Currently the project is almost complete.
Native actors involved in this production include Justin Johnson Cortez (Walker: Independence), Michael Horse (Twin Peaks, Godless, Mother Land, Call of the Wild), Laura Vallejo (This Fool, American Crime Story, Bright), Isa Antonetti, Sam Marra (Stumptown), Nora Zade (Lead the Way), Danny DeLeon (Intrepidus, Something Inside is Broken), Carly Kohler (Intrepidus, Something Inside is Broken), Isabella Delatorre (Intrepidus, Something Inside is Broken), Jada Go Forth (Lead the Way), Samira Go Forth, Kola Shippentower Thompson, Sam Bearpaw (Wild West Chronicles, Yellow Rock), April Lea Go Forth (Lead the Way), Alexandria Zamora, Briza Covarrubias (All Rise, Alta Valley), Vanessa Allen (Ride or Die), Magdalena Escoberdo-Steele, Lisa Craig, Rachel Lemos, Jennifer Robin, Hope Gali and all the RISE students (20 youth) involved in the Dojo scenes.

At about 5 minutes in, Heather invites people's to be independent thinkers. TAAF invites people to do the same. Look at the facts. Go from there. Fact: Heather Rae Bybee has no American Indian ancestry whatsoever. Fact: She is aware of this and has been offered an opportunity to acknowledge the truth and apologize. Fact: She has still not done that.
These young people are doing a wonderful job. But sadly, the woman they are reporting on is a proven fraud, with ZERO American Indian ancestry, Cherokee or otherwise. Heather Rae needs to acknowledge that truth, then she owes American Indian people a sincere apology. Then she needs to step back, and make amends.
